JUNE BIRTHSTONE: PEARL
Pearl has been one of the most sought after gemstones throughout history. It is difficult to trace the origin of pearls to a particular location, however, it is believed that they were discovered by people who were looking for food near the sea. Pearls are the only organic gems which are formed by a sea creature. Due to their organic nature, they are not considered to be minerals. Pearls make a great gift for your loved ones who were born in June. In this post, we have compiled the most frequently asked questions about pearls.
How do pearls form?
Pearls have a very different formation process compared to other gemstones. Instead of the earth's mantle or crust, pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a grain of sand, gets trapped in a mollusk. In order to protect itself, the mollusk wraps the irritant with nacre (mother-of-pearl). This shell grows over time and becomes a pearl.
Are pearls rare?
It is very difficult to encounter a pearl in nature. The cost of finding a pearl in the sea is very high due to all the diving and navigation involved. Due to their rarity, natural pearls are very expensive. Cultured pearls make pearls more commercially available.
Are cultured pearls synthetic?
The short answer is no, cultured pearls are natural. The difference is that cultured pearls are formed by oysters in oyster farms. The oyster farmers kickstart the process by placing an irritant into the mollusk, mimicking a naturally occurring process. The oyster needs to be three years old to form pearls. Synthetic pearls, on the other hand, are inorganic, lab-grown pearls.
Are pearls durable?
Pearls have a hardness rating of 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes them brittle. Their fragile nature is not an obstacle for you to wear them. With proper attention and care, pearl jewelry would also make a great heirloom.
How should I care for my pearl jewelry?
We recommend you to wear your pearl jewelry after applying skin care products and perfumes. To avoid any inconveniences, take off your pearl jewelry before engaging in physical activities.
