How can I clean and care for my jewelry?
Jewelry Care & Cleaning
Jewelry is one of our most valued possessions. They carry a meaning which is very dear to us. Engagement rings remind us of that day you decided to spend your life together with your loved one. Wedding rings express your eternal love and togetherness. Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets show your character to the world.
We want to protect and care for our valuable belongings. The engagement rings and wedding rings we wear daily also want some love. In this post, we will talk about how you can clean your jewelry and care for them.
Every metal and gemstone is unique in their way, and each of them should be treated differently. Different metals have different chemical structures and properties. Also, every gemstone has different hardness and react differently to external factors.
We will begin with metals and give you tips and points on how you may care for them.
Gold Care & Cleaning
Gold jewelry is adored by many and they are an indispensable part of most people's jewelry boxes. As Damalys Diamond, we offer gold in three colors: yellow, white, and rose.
Yellow gold is generally the easiest to maintain among the three colors. However, they may slightly tarnish depending on skin chemistry, and require cleaning.
To clean your gold jewelry: mix lukewarm water with mild detergent, and let your gold jewelry soak in the mixture for five to ten minutes. Gently rub the mixture on your gold jewelry using a very soft toothbrush. You may use a soft cloth to dry off your gold jewelry.
For daily cleaning, a damp cloth is all you need to make your gold jewelry shine. We should add that every purchase you make from Damalys Diamond comes with a cleaning kit for the selected metal.
Household chemicals such as acetone and bleach may damage the integrity of your gold jewelry. Therefore, you should never try to clean your gold jewelry with these chemicals. You would also want to steer clear from chlorine and take off your gold jewelry before swimming and taking a shower.
As we have discussed in our other posts, white gold is coated with rhodium for increased durability and color. The rhodium coating needs to be replaced every other year for the gold to retain its gorgeous color.
Due to the rhodium coating, white gold is more vulnerable to household chemicals such as bleach and acetone. You should never use these chemicals on your white gold jewelry. The same method to clean your yellow gold jewelry may also be applied to white and rose gold.
Make sure to inspect your gold jewelry now and then for any color fading and be certain that the prongs which hold the gemstone are secure. If you encounter any problems, you may contact our customer service for help. Damalys Diamond offers a lifetime warranty on all products and we are eager to solve all of your problems as fast and efficient as possible.
Silver Care & Cleaning
Silver is one of the most popular metals in necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. While silver jewelry is known to tarnish, it is quite easy to clean your silver jewelry and reduce the tarnish. One of the easiest ways to protect your silver jewelry from tarnish is to wear them, as natural skin oil protects the silver from tarnishing.
You may clean your silver jewelry with ingredients one may find in every kitchen. Such as olive oil, white vinegar, and baking soda.
Lemon juice and olive oil: Mix half a cup of lemon juice with a teaspoon of olive oil. Soak a microfiber cloth in the mixture and rinse your silver jewelry with the cloth and let it air dry.
White vinegar and baking soda: This mixture is a great way to remove the built-up tarnish from your silver jewelry. Simply soak your silver jewelry in half a cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda for a few hours and rinse your jewelry with a microfiber cloth.
Platinum Care & Cleaning
Platinum is adored by people who prefer white metals and are chosen over white gold due to their amazing tensile strength and density. Platinum is a dense metal and doesn't lose its beauty even after years of usage. They do not wear down and are very durable. Platinum jewelry makes great heirlooms.
Your platinum jewelry may need cleaning over daily usage. To clean your platinum jewelry, you may utilize the same method we use for gold jewelry. Dip your platinum jewelry into a mixture of lukewarm water and mild detergent. Let it soak for 30 minutes and clean it with a soft toothbrush. Rinse the remaining detergent with cold water. Later on, let it air dry or wipe it with a microfiber cloth.
Make sure get your platinum jewelry inspected once a year. You may always arrange a jewelry check-up with us free of charge.
Gemstone Care & Cleaning
After daily wear and usage, our precious diamonds and gemstones collect dirt and require cleaning. While diamonds are the hardest natural substances on earth, they are also magnets that accumulate grease and dust.
Diamonds need cleaning depending on how often you wear them, an item you wear every day, such as an engagement or wedding ring needs cleaning once every two weeks. Keeping your diamonds and gemstones sparkling is not very difficult. You may clean your gemstones with a mixture of water and a mild detergent. Soak your diamond into the mixture and clean it with a soft toothbrush. Make sure that the toothbrush is new and only used for your gemstones.
In the subject of ultrasonic cleaners, we do not recommend you to use them at home. While your diamond and gemstone jewelry sometimes need to be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, it is better to go to a jeweler. The rapid-moving fluid in the ultrasonic cleaner may loosen the prongs of your jewelry and cause the gemstone to fall. A jeweler will first inspect your jewelry to see if the prongs are loose and tighten them if necessary.
If the prongs on your jewelry are getting loose, or if the gemstone had fallen, arrange a repair with us through customer support. Damalys Diamond offers a lifetime warranty on all products.
Pearl Care & Cleaning
Pearls have been adored for their luster throughout human history. Their popularity has never diminished, not even today. We love pearls! Pearls, however, have a hardness rating of 2.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes them very brittle. They require special care and if they are treated nice, pearl jewelry will last for generations.
Pearls are very sensitive to many chemicals. These chemicals include cosmetic items such as perfumes and hair sprays. They need to be cleaned more gently than we do with harder gemstones. Pearl jewelry should never be cleaned with harsh chemicals like acetone, bleach, and abrasives or using ultrasonic cleaners.
It is generally safe to clean your pearl jewelry with a solution of water and a mild detergent. Gently rub the solution on your pearl jewelry using a soft cotton cloth. For daily cleaning, a soft cotton or lint-free cloth would suffice.
